It's been a long time — at least 15 years — since I last took a look at the old VHS videotapes of 1990s-era Pupule Ohana League hoops. The tapes had been stacked in boxes as I moved from Kona back to Oahu in the late '90s.
But here it is, 2014, and I'm finally getting around to transferring the footage from VHS to digital. Hopefully, in the nick of time. The condition of a some of the tapes I've looked at is great. But a few are looking funky. Some kind of fungus or mildew inside. Still viewable, but the tape is not going to last.
I started dubbing the 1995 summer season, which began on July 19. Three games that day. Those are in the process of exporting and then uploading to YouTube. It takes a long time to load, even though I've split each game into two parts (YouTube time limitation). Long time meaning about 8-10 hours per part.
The bad news is that not only am I missing a few tapes from 1992-95 (some people borrowed and I never got the tapes back), but all the tapes in '96 to '98 are missing. I have backtracked some, no success. Checked to see if the box was misplaced, no luck. If I never find those tapes, it'll keep bumming me out. But at least there's '92-95.
I hope everybody enjoys the tapes. I'm editing out the dead time on whistles when necessary, but it's pretty much intact. All the action that happened and was caught by the camera will be online. Eventually. Please be patient and enjoy the footage. Just from the first day — July 19 — alone, there's some very cool action.
Wednesday, July 19, 1995You'll see the games archived in link lists at the right-hand column. I'd love to have the complete results and final standings at some point, but that would probably require a trip to the West Hawaii Today archives, so that's a low priority for me.
√ Hualalai Development 37, Kona Police 25
√ Honokaa 77, Bianelli's Pizza 72
√ Seacoast Painting 75, American Fence 74
Note: This is not a blog for the current Pupule Ohana League. I wouldn't mind if someone posted scores and videos from the great range of hoops action (Open, 35-over, 40-over, 50-over). That would be awesome. But the focus for me is those tapes from '92 to '95.
Mahalo,
Pupule Paul
